The Network of Women in Media, India mourns the passing of network member, journalist and author Urmi Rahman.
She started her journalistic career in Dhaka, Bangladesh in the early 1970s followed by a stint in London with BBC World Service and as translator for the local government. She also authored three collections of short stories and several children’s books in Bengali. Post retirement, she moved to Kolkata with her partner and also joined the Bengal chapter of NWMI. The Bengal chapter held an informal discussion with her in March 2012, where she spoke about women’s rights in Bangladesh, fundamentalism and law.
Last year, she wrote a vivid piece on her experience of the 1971 War for Freedom for Bangladesh, which became one of the most-read articles on our site. On September 14, 2024, she lost her battle with cancer. She is survived by her partner and son. She will be fondly remembered by her friends and colleagues sisters for her generosity and kindness.
