Social Media Statement on Sexual Harassment of Women Journalists:

Three women journalists have complained of sexual harassment by police personnel in Delhi, when they were covering the protest to demand the resignation of Chief Election Committee Gyanesh Kumar. They have demanded that FIRs be registered against police personnel.

The women journalists have testified on the assault by police during the protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) calling for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi on the 3rd of October.

The Delhi Police has only responded on its X handle saying that the complaints are being “transferred to Crime Branch for fair and impartial enquiry.” However, no FIRs have been registered.

The NWMI demands that
a) the police STOP sexual harassment of women journalists and
b) FIRs are registered against the offending personnel including ACP Vivek Bhagat immediately and that
c) the police personnel are immediately suspended, pending inquiry.
Their continuation on duty imperils the safety and security of all women, journalists as well as student and youth activists.
