NWMI Condemns Assault on Women Journalists by Delhi Police
The Network of Women in Media, India unequivocally condemns the brutal assault on Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, both journalists with 4pm News, and demands strict action against the police personnel involved.
The journalists were covering the inauguration of a new wing at the Max Hospital by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 3 September 2026 and sought to ask questions as reporters, including queries about an alleged cycle scam.
Preventing them from doing so, the police reportedly handled the two journalists roughly. They were then taken to the Saket police station, where they were beaten up. Once it was known that both of them were Muslim, the police personnel escalated their attacks, reportedly hurling religion-specific abuses at the two journalists.
The NWMI stands in solidarity with Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan and urges the Commissioner, Delhi Police to launch an investigation into the conduct of the police officers involved in this unacceptable behaviour. We demand that the police personnel involved in the assault be suspended pending inquiry.
Such attacks on journalists are unconstitutional and against freedom of the press, which is an essential part of freedom of expression.
