Social Media Statement in Solidarity with Tongam Rina:
NWMI condemns the search warrants issued by the police against The Arunachal Times Deputy Editor Tongam Rina. Her newsroom has been among the few to highlight the ongoing protests against the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. This is an attack on press freedom and a violation of journalists’ rights.
Additionally, the BJP govt’s crackdown on protestors and arrests of anti-dam activists Ebo Mili, Otul Jerang and Tajong Talom, and search warrant against their lawyer, shows a disregard of democratic right to protest and to legal representation.
We stand by Tongam Rina, our colleague and fellow NWMI member.
Such intimidatory tactics by the police against journalists, lawyers and activists are reprehensible and must be stopped.
