The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) is surprised and saddened by a Kerala Government press release on March 30, officially announcing that Dr Sriram Venkitaraman has been reinstated to a plum post in the State Government. As news professionals from various parts of the country, we find it hard to believe that Pinarayi Vijayan Government would be in a hurry to whitewash a doctor-IAS officer, who, in drunken driving, ran over a young journalist KM Basheer.
It is vital to note that after taking the life of the Bureau Chief of Siraj Daily, our dear K M Basheer, using an acquaintance’s car, this doctor also abused his Hippocrates oath and IAS connections to prolong the blood test to find alcohol in his blood. He did not hesitate to use his Government clout to escape the law and get a diagnosis that he had “retrograde amnesia”.
NWMI is also aghast that Dr Sriram IAS has been placed as a joint secretary in charge of Covid-19 control.
How can a doctor without medical ethics be assigned this important task!
How can an IAS officer, diagnosed with “retrograde amnesia” be given this responsible memory-taxing assignment!
It seems logical that that those whom he wined and dined on that fatal night is pressurising the Chief Minister to give him an anti- Covid mission hero’s halo. CM should not have gone for this decision. It was ill advised.
With great regret, we wish to point out that this single move diminishes the country-wide respect that the Pinarayi Government and State Health Minister KK Shylaja has acquired in their efficiency in handling the pandemic. We are certain that , on second thoughts, better wisdom would prevail.
NWMI, has no option in the current context, but to register our vehement indignation at the injustice to our fellow journalist. We request you, in good faith, to keep him out of the Government office and show your empathy with the KM Basheer and his journalist fraternity.

ഡോ. ശ്രീറാം വെങ്കിട്ട രാമൻ ഐഎഎസ്സിനെ കേരള സർക്കാർ, സർവീസിൽ ഉന്നതപദവിയിൽ തിരിച്ചെടുത്തതായുള്ള പ്രഖ്യാപനം മാർച്ച് 30-ന് ഔദ്യോഗികമായിത്തന്നെ സർക്കാർ പ്രസ് റിലീസായി വന്നപ്പോൾ, ഞങ്ങൾ NWMI (നെറ്റ്വർക്ക് ഓഫ് വിമൻ ഇൻ മീഡിയ – ഇന്ത്യ) യ്ക്ക് ഉണ്ടായ നടുക്കവും സങ്കടവും അടക്കാനാവുന്നതല്ല.
ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പല ഭാഗത്തുള്ള മാധ്യമ പ്രവർത്തകർ എന്ന കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ നോക്കുമ്പോൾ, കേരളത്തിലെ പിണറായി വിജയൻ സർക്കാർ, മദ്യപിച്ചു വാഹനമോടിച്ച് ഒരു യുവ പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഒരു ഐഎഎസ്സുകാരൻ ഡോക്ടറെ, വെള്ള പൂശാൻ ധൃതി കാട്ടി എന്നത് വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കാൻ തന്നെ പ്രയാസമാണ്.
തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് സിറാജ് പത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ബ്യൂറോ ചീഫായിരുന്ന കെ എം ബഷീറിനെ, കാറിടിച്ച് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയ ശേഷം ശേഷം, ഈ ഡോക്ടർക്ക്, രക്തത്തിലെ മദ്യത്തിന്റെ അംശം അളക്കാനുള്ള പരിശോധന മനഃപൂർവം വൈകിക്കാൻ, സ്വന്തം ഹിപ്പോക്രേറ്റിക് പ്രതിജ്ഞ പോലും കാറ്റിൽ പറത്താനോ, ഐഎഎസ് ഉന്നത ബന്ധങ്ങൾ ദുരുപയോഗപ്പെടുത്താനോ അശേഷം കൂസലുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലല്ലോ.
നിയമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ തനിയ്ക്ക് “റിട്രോഗ്രെഡ് അംനേഷ്യ”(?!) ആണെന്ന ഡോക്ടറുടെ കുറിപ്പടി എത്ര പെട്ടെന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കിട്ടിയത്?
ഡോ. ശ്രീറാമിനെ കൊവിഡ് – നിയന്ത്രണത്തിന്റെ ചുമതലയുള്ള ജോയിന്റ് സെക്രട്ടറിയായാണ് നിയമിച്ചത് എന്നത് വല്ലാത്ത ഞെട്ടലുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. മെഡിക്കൽ എത്തിക്സ് ലവലേശം പാലിക്കാത്ത ഒരു ഡോക്ടർക്ക് ഈ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ദൗത്യം എങ്ങനെയാണ് നൽകിയത്?
“റിട്രോഗ്രെഡ് അംനേഷ്യ” ബാധിതൻ എന്ന് മെഡിക്കൽ പരിശോധനയിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഒരു ഐഎഎസ് ഓഫീസർ എങ്ങനെയാണ് കൊവിഡ് നിയന്ത്രണം പോലെ സങ്കീർണ്ണമായ, അത്യധികം മനുഷ്യത്വം ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചുമതല നിറവേറ്റുക?!
ബഷീറിനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയ ആ രാത്രിയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം വിരുന്നുണ്ടവർ തന്നെയാവും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഈ കസേരയിൽ എത്തിക്കാൻ സമ്മർദ്ദം ചെലുത്തിയത് എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത് തന്നെയാണ് യുക്തിഭദ്രം. എങ്കിൽപ്പോലും ബഷീറിന്റെ പ്രൊഫഷണലിസവും പ്രസന്നമായ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യവും നേരിട്ട് പരിചയമുള്ള മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഈ നിയമനത്തിന് തയ്യാറാവരുതായിരുന്നു.
ലോകം ഭയക്കുന്ന ഒരു മഹാമാരിയെ നേരിടുന്നതിൽ പിണറായി സർക്കാരും , ആരോഗ്യമന്ത്രി കെ കെ ശൈലജയും കാര്യക്ഷമത കൊണ്ട് നേടിയെടുത്ത ആദരവിന്റെ ശോഭ കെടുത്തുന്നതാണ് ഈ ഒരൊറ്റ കാൽവെയ്പ്പ് .
ദുരുപദിഷ്ടമാണ് അത്. രണ്ടാമതൊന്ന് ആലോചിച്ചാൽ സർക്കാരിന് അത് ബോദ്ധ്യപ്പെടും എന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉറപ്പുണ്ട്.
എങ്കിലും ശ്രീറാം ആ കസേരയിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നിടത്തോളം ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉൽക്കണ്ഠയുണ്ട് . കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട സഹപ്രവർത്തകനോടുള്ള നീതികേടിൽ ഞങ്ങളുടെ തീവ്രമായ പ്രതിഷേധം ഈ അവസരത്തിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
ബഷീറിനോടും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കുടുംബത്തോടും, മാധ്യമ പ്രവർത്തക സമൂഹത്തോടും അനുതാപത്തോടെ ഒപ്പം നിൽക്കാനുള്ള നീതിബോധം ഞങ്ങൾ സർക്കാരിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിയ്ക്കുന്നു.
