NWMI wins Laadli Gender Champion Award

By Editors

The Network of Women in Media, India, (NWMI), was conferred the Laadli Gender Champion Award by Population First. NWMI was recognised for promoting gender sensitivity in media and fostering solidarity among women journalists. This award was instituted in memory of Kamla Bhasin, Gail Omvedt, and Sonal Shukla, who passed away in 2021.

Population First is a social impact organization focusing on women’s empowerment, gender equality, and community mobilization, and their flagship program, Laadli, harnesses the power of the media and advertising industry to change how India perceives and treats its women.

The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) celebrate individuals and organisations in the media and advertising industry who highlight gender concerns through their work. The awards were first introduced in 2007 with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In 2017, they gained international recognition with the support of IAA (India Chapter), expanding to cover Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Mauritius. The awards are now known as the South Asia Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (SALMAAGS) and this edition is being supported by AFAA and SAWM.
