The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) strongly condemns the reprehensible behaviour of NewsFirst Kannada while covering New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bengaluru on 31 December 2023. In the guise of disseminating news, the television channel employed a predatory lens that actively contributed to the degradation and objectification of women who had joined the thousands of people out on the streets to bring in the new year.
Women leaving pubs found themselves subjected to unwarranted attention from the media, with the channel’s staff unabashedly attempting to capture their identities on camera, against their wishes. Despite the visible discomfort of the women and their explicit requests to the media persons to refrain from filming them, the NewsFirst television channel persisted with its intrusive actions. It is significant that they did this in the presence of law enforcement officials who can be seen in the video doing nothing to stop the camerapersons.
Decisions to drink alcohol or refrain from doing so are entirely up to each individual, just as choice of attire is a personal decision. The primary responsibility of news media is to report news in the public interest. New Year’s Eve celebrations have grown into major public events that make news. However, the role of the media is to report on the revelries and, when necessary, to hold those in positions of authority accountable. It is not their job to assume the role of moral police intruding into the private lives of citizens, especially women. It is shameful that channels like NewsFirst have opted to try and increase their reach and misuse their influence by overstepping the boundaries they ought to recognise and respect as news media.
The NWMI notes with concern that several Kannada news channels – including Public TV, Zee Kannada News, and others – ran similar content, albeit with visuals that were comparatively less revealing of the women’s faces. Nonetheless, the thumbnails and titles of these videos were equally misogynistic.
The NWMI calls for more responsibility and accountability from the news media, particularly television channels. We demand that NewsFirst Kannada issue a public statement of apology for its unethical and exploitative coverage of the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bengaluru, and the injustice done to the victims of the unacceptable and unethical behaviour of its personnel. We believe it is important to note that decision-makers in the channel, and not only staff on the ground, are responsible for the type of coverage that is aired. The channel must also publicly acknowledge and apologise for its misrepresentation of events and for failing to comply with journalistic standards and ethics.
A few of the offensive videos have now been taken down but some reports still remain publicly accessible. We demand that all content, including social media posts and videos, are taken down immediately, without any further delay.

ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಾಚರಣೆ: ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಖಾಸಗಿತನ ಅತಿಕ್ರಮಿಸುವ ರೀತಿಯ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಫಸ್ಟ್ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ವರದಿಗಾರಿಕೆಗೆ ಎನ್ ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯು ಎಂ ಐ ಖಂಡನೆ
2023ರ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 31ರಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಾಚರಣೆಯ ವರದಿಗಾರಿಕೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಫಸ್ಟ್ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ನ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪಾರ್ಹ ವರ್ತನೆಯನ್ನು ನೆಟ್ ವರ್ಕ್ ಆಫ್ ವಿಮೆನ್ ಇನ್ ಮೀಡಿಯ (ಎನ್ ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಎಂಐ) ತೀವ್ರವಾಗಿ ಖಂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸುದ್ದಿ ಪ್ರಸರಣದ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಟೆಲಿವಿಷನ್ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ‘ಅತಿಕ್ರಮಣಕಾರಕ ಲೆನ್ಸ್’ , ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಲು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಜನರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರನ್ನು ಹೀಗಳೆಯುವ ಹಾಗೂ ಸರಕೀಕರಣಗೊಳಿಸುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಂಬಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಪಬ್ ಗಳಿಂದ ಹೊರ ಬಂದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಅನಗತ್ಯ ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ತುತ್ತಾಗಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಇಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಯಾವುದೇ ಅಳುಕಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೆರೆಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಎದುರುಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಎದ್ದುಕಾಣುವ ಇರುಸುಮುರುಸು ಹಾಗೂ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರೀಕರಿಸಬಾರದೆಂದು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಮನವಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಧಿಕ್ಕರಿಸಿ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಫಸ್ಟ್ ಟೆಲಿವಿಷನ್ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರೀಕರಿಸಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾನೂನು, ಸುವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಜಾರಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಹಾಜರಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲು ಯಾವ ಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೈಗೊಂಡಿಲ್ಲ, ಎಂಬುದು ವಿಡಿಯೊ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ.
ಉಡುಪಿನ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಂತೆಯೇ, ಮದ್ಯ ಸೇವನೆ ಅಥವಾ ಮದ್ಯಪಾನ ಮಾಡದಿರುವುದು ಆಯಾ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ. ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಹಿತಾಸಕ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳನ್ನು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ. ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷಾಚರಣೆ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಗಳು, ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮಾಡುವಂತಹ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿವೆ. ಸಂಭ್ರಮಾಚರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಹಾಗೂ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಬಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ, ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತರದಾಯಿಯಾಗಿಸುವುದಷ್ಟೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ಪಾತ್ರವಿರುವುದು. ನಾಗರಿಕರ ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಖಾಸಗಿ ಬದುಕುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅತಿಕ್ರಮಿಸಿ ನೈತಿಕ ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ವಹಿಸುವುದು ಅವರ ಕೆಲಸವಲ್ಲ. ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮವಾಗಿ, ತಾವು ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಗೌರವಿಸಬೇಕಿರುವ ಗಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಭಾವವನ್ನು ದುರ್ಬಳಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಫಸ್ಟ್ ನಂತಹ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಗಳು ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿ ಮೀರಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆದಿದ್ದು ನಾಚಿಕೆಗೇಡು.
ಪಬ್ಲಿಕ್ ಟೀವಿ, ಝಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಗಳೂ ಇಂತಹದೇ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳನ್ನು, ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಮುಖ ಮರೆ ಮಾಡಿ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಎನ್ ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಎಂಐ ಆತಂಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗಿದ್ದೂ ಈ ವಿಡಿಯೊಗಳ ಅಡಕ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಗಳು ಸ್ತ್ರೀದ್ವೇಷದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದವು.
ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಟೆಲಿವಿಷನ್ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಗಳಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಉತ್ತರದಾಯಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಎನ್ ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಎಂಐ ಕರೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷಾಚರಣೆ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದ ಅನೈತಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಶೋಷಣಾತ್ಮಕ ವರದಿಗಾರಿಕೆಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ತನ್ನ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪಾರ್ಹ, ಅನೈತಿಕ ವರ್ತನೆಗಳಿಂದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾದ ಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತೆಯರಿಗೆ ನ್ಯೂಸ್ ಫಸ್ಟ್ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಕ್ಷಮಾಪಣೆಯನ್ನು ಕೋರಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಾವು ಆಗ್ರಹ ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಮಾಡಲಾದ ವರದಿಗಳ ರೀತಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಚಾನೆಲ್್ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುವವರೂ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರರು ಎಂದು ನಾವು ನಂಬುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಘಟನೆಗಳ ತಪ್ಪು
ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಮಾನದಂಡ ಹಾಗೂ ನೀತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಬದ್ಧವಾಗದ ವೈಫಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಈ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು, ಕ್ಷಮಾಪಣೆ ಕೇಳಬೇಕು.
ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಆಕ್ರಮಣಕಾರಕ ವಿಡಿಯೊಗಳನ್ನು ಚಾನೆಲ್ ಈಗ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈಗಲೂ ಕೆಲವು ವರದಿಗಳು ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿವೆ. ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಡಿಯೊಗಳು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿಳಂಬವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಾವು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.
