Picturesque Guwahati will be hosting the 19th national meeting of the Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) from January 31 to February 3, 2025.
Perched along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, Guwahati is nestled within an amphitheatre of verdant natural landscapes, cultural and spiritual heritage, and powered by modern infrastructure. Witness to some epic moments in history, the city has marched on with time and has truly grown into a cosmopolitan whole, complete with a vibrant social circle, major commercial and educational centres of Northeastern India, food hubs, and tourist spots.
Northeast India, comprising eight states, is the home of many indigenous and marginalised groups with unique biodiversity in India’s periphery for long. Geographically separate from the rest of so-called ‘mainstream’ India, the region has witnessed long-drawn insurgencies and movements for self-determination. Additionally, unplanned development with its subsequent impact on people, including destruction of forests and environment, has affected the region, particularly women and children. The impact of global warming and climate change is being directly felt in the Northeastern states, with women bearing the brunt. The media in this context, has an important role to play in raising awareness and focussing on issues that affect the marginalised.
The 2025 NWMI national meet in Guwahati, focusing on the theme ‘Media, Conflict, Climate Change: Impact on Women’ is all set to be an immersive experience for women journalists from across the country.
Note: The NWMI National meetings are open to members only.
