Should the identity of a rape victim/survivor be disclosed? Advocate Vrinda Grover unpacks the law

Even as social media is flooded with photographs, videos and reels disclosing the identity of the doctor who was recently raped and murdered on the hospital in Kolkata where she worked, Vrinda Grover (Advocate, Supreme Court of India), kindly responded to NWMI’s request to clarify the legal position on such disclosures. In this brief video, she outlines the relevant provisions in the laws relating to sexual violence.

This evening (Tuesday 20 August 2024) the Supreme Court of India weighed in on the matter and ordered the removal of the RG Kar victim’s name and photos from social media and news media in response to two lawyers who moved the Court against the disclosure of the name and identity of the deceased woman.
