The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) strongly condemns the government’s over-zealousness in pursuing and investigating charges of misdoing and misappropriation of funds against journalist-activists Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand.

The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) strongly condemns the government’s over-zealousness in pursuing and investigating charges of misdoing and misappropriation of funds against journalist-activists Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand. These actions are disproportionate to the gravity of the charges against them that are, in any case, as yet unproven. This deliberate harassment, including the raid on their home and office and frequent summons for questioning, constitutes an attempt to intimidate and silence Setalvad and Anand in their ongoing efforts to win justice for the victims of the 2002 post-Godhra attacks and stop them from exposing the complicity of the state in communal conflict through their journal Communalism Combat. As women journalists who are part of a nationwide network, we express our solidarity with Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand.
