Arti Jaiman is the Station Director of Gurgaon Ki Awaaz Samudayik Radio, a community radio station set up by the NGO, The Restoring Force. Broadcasting 22 hours a day for marginalised community groups in Gurgaon since November 2009, Gurgaon Ki Awaaz is today a National Award-winning station that has created a space for community media in a media-cluttered environment such as Gurgaon.
An active campaigner for free speech, Arti is the Treasurer of the Community Radio Forum, an advocacy group supporting freedom of expression through the use of community media, a member of AMARC, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, member of Network of Women in Media, India; and co-founder of the network of Indian women community radio broadcasters, Women In Radio.
A journalist by training, with a career spanning 24 years, Arti has worked as a feature writer with ‘Artscape’, the arts pages of The Economic Times, writing on art, design, the role of the arts in education, and literature in translation.
She co-founded www.pitara.com, India’s first children’s website in 1998. She has co-authored books for SCERT, Delhi, and Indian Council for Child Welfare, Delhi, and has written for The Hindu, Tehelka and The Hindustan Times.
Arti completed her bachelors in English literature from Hindu College, Delhi University, a post graduate diploma in journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi; and a masters in journalism from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA.
